Convert 3-Way Switches to Outlets

How to Convert 3-Way Switches to Outlets

To convert a 3-way switch to an outlet, one of the switches is removed and replaced with an outlet. Both electrical boxes will need to be rewired.

See the wiring diagrams below, showing how to convert a load side switch to an outlet.

Ground connection diagram is shown separately.

Line Side Box

1. One of the traveler wires is removed from the 3-way switch.

2. Using a wire connector, this traveler is connected to the line wire and a wire that will connect to the common terminal of the line side 3-way switch. This will provide power to the new outlet in the load side switch box.
