Push-In Connections on Switches and Outlets

15 amp switches and outlets may have push-in connectors near the screw-on terminals on the back of each device. These switches and outlets are rated for residential use. Commercial grade switches and outlets typically do not use push-in connectors.

These push-in connectors will accept only #14 solid wires. A wire strip gauge guide is provided on the back of these outlets to show how much insulation to strip off the wire before inserting into the push-in terminal.

Even though push-in wire connections are UL approved for 15 amp circuits, many electricians feel that these connections are less reliable than attaching the wires directly to the screw terminals.

How to Remove Push-In Wires From Switches and Outlets

Switches and outlets with push-in terminals should have a release slot so a wire can be easily removed from the terminal.
